Being Evel (2015)

Director – Daniel Junge

Starring – Evel Knievel, George Hamilton, Johnny Knoxville

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4076756/?ref_=nv_sr_2

What’s it all about? – The life and works of Robert ‘Evel’ Knievel, stuntman and all round crazy person.

Notes & scribbles

  • People just seemed to watch him doing stunts in case it went wrong, so they could say they were there.
  • He beat his publicist up with a baseball bat for pretty much telling the truth about him in a book.  The fact he beat him up pretty much proved the publicists point.
  • Glad to find out his name really wasn’t Evel.
  • He died on my 31st birthday.

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (2015)

Director – Stanley Nelson

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4316236/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Notes & scribbles

  • Basically it’s members of the Black Panthers telling the story from the formation of the party and the reactions to it, to the present day.
  • I now know where the Boo Radleys got the title of ‘Free Huey’ from.  It came from chants and posters that demonstrators used to protest about the incarceration of Huey Newton, a founding member of the Black Panthers.
  • I’d obviously heard of the Black Panthers but didn’t really know too much about them.  Good, informative documentary.

Notes & scribbles

  • A hundred or so comedians talk about a joke that really only comedians perform.
  • Never, ever, get it mixed up with the Disney film The Aristocats
  • Gilbert Gottfried wins!
  • Saw this at the cinema originally, bought the DVD at a car boot sale.
  • It’s not really about the joke itself, but the performance and the storytelling.

What’s it all about? – Two film-making Israeli cousins, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who buy Cannon films and produce some amount of cult/crap cinema throughout the 80’s. Listed above are some of the actors and directors they worked with over the years.  Below is a list of films that clips were shown of during the documentary.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Film clips shown: Operation Thunderbolt, Lemon Popsicle, Joe (Peter Boyle, Susan Sarandon), Happy Hooker, Schizoid, X-Ray, Happy Hooker Goes To Hollywood, The Apple (Crazy looking musical), House Of The Long Shadows, Lady Chatterley’s Lover (Sylvia Kristel), Last American Virgin, Death Wish 2 (Charles Bronson), The Wicked Lady, Enter The Ninja, Revenge Of The Ninja, Ninja 3: The Domination, Sahara (not the McConaughey one), Hercules (Lou Ferrigno), Breakin’, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Over The Brooklyn Bridge, Bolero, America 3000, Missing In Action: The Beginning (Chuck Norris), Missing In Action (Chuck again), American Ninja (Michael Dudikoff), Invasion USA (Chuck again), Lifeforce, Going Bananas, Death Wish 3 (Bronson again), Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (and again), Otello, Love Streams, King Lear, Barfly, Runaway Train (Jon Voight, Eric Roberts, Rebecca DeMornay), King Solomons Mines (Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone), Alan Quatermain And The Lost City Of Gold (Chamberlain and Stone again), The Delta Force (Chuck once more), Invaders From Mars, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (Dennis Hopper), Over The Top (Stallone), Superman 4: Quest For Peace (looking at the clip I’m not sure I’ve seen it), Masters Of The Universe (Dolph), Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Cyborg (JCVD), Lambada, The Forbidden Dance.
  • It seemed they would take ideas and sell them, then use the money to make the films.
  • Mostly quantity over quality it would appear.
  • Everyone who did an impression of Menahem, got it spot on.
  • Richard Chamberlain bitched about Sharon Stone.  Not a fan by all accounts.
  • It seemed people either loved working for them, or hated it.
  • Entertaining documentary, good stories, and some crazy looking films!

Room 237 (2012)

Director – Rodney Ascher

Starring – Lots of people with way too much time on their hands.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085910/?ref_=nv_sr_3

What’s it all about?  ‘Experts’ in various fields go into huge amounts of detail, with various interpretations and conspiracy theories that may, or may not, be visible while watching Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining

Notes and scribbles

  • If you ever have the opportunity to watch the same film, over and over again, you’ll probably start noticing things you hadn’t seen before.  And if you are an expert in a specific field, then you will probably be able to watch a film and find something in it, that you can talk about.
  • If you are sad enough to watch it in slow motion, frame by frame, or in one case here, backwards, then you have got way too much time on your hands.  I know The Shining is a great film, but come on!
