Being Evel (2015)

Director – Daniel Junge

Starring – Evel Knievel, George Hamilton, Johnny Knoxville

What’s it all about? – The life and works of Robert ‘Evel’ Knievel, stuntman and all round crazy person.

Notes & scribbles

  • People just seemed to watch him doing stunts in case it went wrong, so they could say they were there.
  • He beat his publicist up with a baseball bat for pretty much telling the truth about him in a book.  The fact he beat him up pretty much proved the publicists point.
  • Glad to find out his name really wasn’t Evel.
  • He died on my 31st birthday.

12 Rounds 3: Lockdown (2015)

Director – Stephen Reynolds

Starring – Dean Ambrose, Roger Cross, Daniel Cudmore, Lochlyn Munro

What’s it all about?

Notes & scribbles

  • Flash drive disguised as a credit card. Pretty cool

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (2015)

Director – Stanley Nelson

Notes & scribbles

  • Basically it’s members of the Black Panthers telling the story from the formation of the party and the reactions to it, to the present day.
  • I now know where the Boo Radleys got the title of ‘Free Huey’ from.  It came from chants and posters that demonstrators used to protest about the incarceration of Huey Newton, a founding member of the Black Panthers.
  • I’d obviously heard of the Black Panthers but didn’t really know too much about them.  Good, informative documentary.

The Hunter (2011)

Director – Daniel Nettheim

Starring – Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Frances O’Connor

Notes & scribbles

  • Based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Julia Leigh
  • Live scribbling as I watch.
  • Nice beard Willem.
  • Tasmanian tiger hunt then.
  • One of the kids is called Bike??
  • The locals don’t seem too friendly towards Willem.
  • So the kids dad is missing. Wonder if Willem is gonna be distracted from the job in hand?
  • Scenery looks amazing.
  • Gunshot! Is the hunter being hunted?
  • The locals don’t like environmentalists (greenies).
  • I’m on Fire by Springsteen.  Opening lines very apt.
  • Infrared camera in a tree?
  • Ok. Bike’s real name is Jamie. That’s a relief.
  • Looks like Bike is helping Willem by drawing pictures.
  • Those traps look terrifying!
  • Ooyah! Ran right into that branch there. Sare face!
  • So the greenies cost the loggers their jobs
  • Sam Neill is up to something!
  • Think Willem found the dad. Or whats left of him.
  • No tiger so far.
  • The weather can look quite Scottish there. Chucking it doon!
  • Uh-oh – that’s the guy from the start of the film.  What’s he up to?
  • I’m sensing some kind of showdown.
  • He’s caught in a trap. He can’t get out!
  • BANG!
  • Springsteen song doubly ironic now!
  • Was that a Tassie tiger?
  • What a strange looking creature.
  • Sad, wee ending though I did enjoy it.

Texas Killing Fields (2011)

Director – Ami Canaan Mann

Starring – Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chloe Grace Moritz, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Annabeth Gish, Stephen Graham, Sheryl Lee,

What’s it all about? – Cops on the case of the killers of young women who’s bodies are found in the Texas Killing Fields.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Director is the daughter of Michael Mann, but not the singer Aimee Mann – I should’ve known.
  • Apparently loosely based on true events.
  • Entertaining enough, well acted.
  • Quite liked the Mazzy Star song on the soundtrack.

Jonah Hex (2010)

Director – Jimmy Hayward

Starring – Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon, Wes Bentley, Tom Wopat, Aidan Quinn, Jeffrey Dean Morgan,

What’s it all about? – Comic book revenge thriller as Jonah Hex tries to find the man who killed his family and disfigured his face and save the United States from destruction.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Based on a DC comic I’ve never heard of.
  • Did not even know Fassbender was in it, even after seeing him a few times. Took me a wee while to recognise him
  • Quite a few well known actors in really small parts, Shannon, Bentley, Morgan.
  • A wee bit strange seeing Arnett in a serious role (watching a lot of Arrested Development just now)

Maximum Conviction (2012)

Director – Keoni Waxman

Starring – Steven Seagal, Steve Austin, Michael Paré

What’s it all about? – Watchable, but run of the mill action film.  More than a little bit Assault on Precinct 13 to be honest.  Maximum security prison closing down with the last inmates being transferred out.  As always, bad guys want one of the inmates and all hell breaks loose.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Just can’t believe Seagal and Austin being best buddies.
  • Enjoyed Austin’s little quips about his ‘future ex-wife’
