The Princess Bride (1987)

Director – Rob Reiner

Starring – Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin, Andre The Giant, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, Mel Smith, Peter Cook,

What’s it all about?

Notes & scribbles

  • Based on the 1973 novel by William Goldman
  • Always forget how good Andre the Giant is in this.
  • Oscar Nomination (1) Best Music, Original Song – Storybook Love

F/X (1986)

DirectorRobert Mandel

StarringBryan Brown, Brian Dennehy, Diane Venora, Cliff DeYoung, Mason Adams, Jerry Orbach, Tom Noonan, Angela Bassett

What’s it all about? – Film special effects guy gets hired to fake a mobsters death and is then framed for his murder. Obviously he uses his FX know-how to help clear his name.

Notes & Scribbles

  • He really let himself get sucked into that situation, didn’t he?
  • Clever little insight into some of the special effects that were used in films.
  • Want to see the sequel now, but I wonder what a remake would look like with the advances in make-up and special effects these days.
  • Good moustache by Brian Dennehy
  • Watched this on YouTube thanks to the free wi-fi in Madrid airport.

They Live (1988)

Director – John Carpenter

Starring – Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, Peter Jason,

What’s it all about? – The ‘Rowdy’ one finds out that aliens are taking over the world, and can see them when he is wearing sunglasses.  Cue aliens being killed and Roddy saving the day.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Based on the short story ‘Eight O’Clock In The Morning’ by Ray Nelson
  • I think there’s probably a law that states if you write about this film you have to mention the classic ‘I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass….. and I’m all out of bubblegum’ line. It’s daft, but great!
  • Loved the fight scene in the alley between Piper and David.  It seemed to go on forever.  Wonder if it inspired the Peter vs Chicken fights in Family Guy.
  • Meg Foster is a bit creepy looking.

Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Director – Stephen King

Starring – Emilio Estevez, Pat Hingle, Laura Harrington, Yeardley Smith

What’s it all about? – Machines come to life and a group of random folk trapped at a truck stop by their own trucks, attempt to defeat the machines and make their escape.  It’s a very silly film.

Notes & Scribbles

  • While it was pretty creepy, I did think the Green Goblin on the front of the toy truck was pretty cool.
  • Loved the AC/DC soundtrack (and the AC/DC van on the bridge). Apparently King is a big fan.
  • Lisa Simpson in a horror film!
  • It didn’t take Emilio and the girl long to get it on, despite the obvious danger.  Maybe they just needed to distract themselves for a wee while?  Or maybe Emilio thought ‘What would Charlie do?’
  • Pat Hingle calling everyone Bubba got quite tiresome very quickly.
  • Apparently King was coked out of his nut while directing this.  Explains a lot!
