The Number 23 (2007)

Director – Joel Schumacher

Starring – Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Danny Huston, Logan Lerman, Rhona Mitra, Bud Cort, Mark Pellegrino, Ed Lauter

What’s it all about? – The title says it all. The number 23 and a lot of imagination!

Notes & Scribbles

  • Pretty sure if you had the time and were bored you could do this with most numbers

Pitch Black (2000)

Director – David Twohy

Starring – Vin Diesel, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Keith David

What’s it all about? – Spaceship crashes on random planet. Diesel is the bad guy on his way to jail.  There’s bad things on this planet!  Can the other survivors trust him? There’s a ‘good guy’ who might be a cop. There’s the standard religious guy.  There’s the guy you kinda hope dies later.  And the usual folks you have no opinion of.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Cant help looking at Cole Hauser and thinking how much he looks like a young Tom Berenger
  • Liked the scene where Harris was about to die and he blew the alcohol onto the flame, showing all the creatures around him
  • Comparisons with Alien, The Thing, Starship Troopers and The Descent. There’s probably more.
  • I’ve got a couple of sequels to watch now.

The Recruit (2003)

Director – Roger Donaldson

Starring – Colin Farrell, Al Pacino, Bridget Moynahan, Gabriel Macht,

What’s it all about? – Pacino is the CIA agent who trains Farrell to find a mole within the CIA, then it gets twisty and turny, as these films tend to.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Farrell was in S.W.A.T., while Macht was in the sequel S.W.A.T. Firefight

Jonah Hex (2010)

Director – Jimmy Hayward

Starring – Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon, Wes Bentley, Tom Wopat, Aidan Quinn, Jeffrey Dean Morgan,

What’s it all about? – Comic book revenge thriller as Jonah Hex tries to find the man who killed his family and disfigured his face and save the United States from destruction.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Based on a DC comic I’ve never heard of.
  • Did not even know Fassbender was in it, even after seeing him a few times. Took me a wee while to recognise him
  • Quite a few well known actors in really small parts, Shannon, Bentley, Morgan.
  • A wee bit strange seeing Arnett in a serious role (watching a lot of Arrested Development just now)

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Director – Jim Gillespie

Starring – Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr, Johnny Galecki, Anne Heche, Bridgette Wilson,

What’s it all about? – Four schoolies kill someone, then a year later it comes back to bite them.

Notes & Scribbles

  • Based on book of the same name by Lois Duncan, apparently she hated the film.
  • Standard teen slasher film.  False accusations, mistrust, folk you think are dead that aren’t, virginity lost.
  • Some cover versions on the soundtrack – Summer Breeze by Type O Negative, Hey Bulldog by Toad The Wet Sprocket, Hush by Kula Shaker.
  • All in all I preferred the Scream films.
  • Two sequels, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.
  • Other possible sequels – I Don’t Care What You Did Last Summer, Why Don’t You Do Something In Winter, Is This What You Did In Autumn and What’s The Point Of Doing Something In Spring. (Copyrighting all of these. Gold I tell ya, Gold!)
